Report on treadle pumps in Ntcheu

We register our thanks and appreciation for the donation of Ten (10) treadle pumps.

Attached is the report and pictures of how the pumps were distributed and how they will benefit the beneficiaries. Maranatha Ministries cannot thank you enough because your donation is such that will go a long way in alleviating of suffering of people who experience hopelessness and despair.

1.    NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES BY AGE AND GENDER

Ten (10) people were given treadle pumps . Those who will benefit directly or indirectly as the result of availability of the pumps as follows:

 FEMALES
Ages     5 - 9 years = 250
        10 - 20 years = 150
        21 – 50 years = 100
        51 – 65 years and above = 120
        Total 620 people.

MALES
Ages    5 – 9 years = 170
    10 – 20 years = 90
    21 – 50 years = 86
    51 – 65 years and above = 59
    Total = 405 people.

Totals = 1025 people

2.    SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF THE BENEFICIARIES

Majority of them, 99% ultre poor, living below the poverty line. They are under high dependency of subsistence farming. Their average annual earnings are 43 US$. HIV/AIDS has compounded their poverty to more disturbing Levels. Most of the youth in the beneficiary list are orphans. Some of them were HIV infected at birth. 85% of the women are widows who lost their husbands to HIV/AIDS.

3.    HOW THE PEOPLE WILL BENEFIT FROM THE TREADLE PUMPS.
The treadle pumps will reduce poverty of the beneficiaries in the following aspects;

Household food Security and Improvement of socio-Economic Status
The treadle pumps will enable the people grow maize in winter; hence beef up for food insufficiency resulting from poor harvest from the traditional summer harvests. Maize is the staple food crop in Malawi.

The treadle pump irrigation initiative will enable the beneficiaries improve their nutrition and income levels through vegetable growing. Most of Maranatha’s operation area experiences environmental Degradation done to lack of trees which were wantonly cut for firewood.

The treadle pumps will enable the beneficiaries raise tree nurseries for wood and fruits trees. The treadle pumps will indeed alleviate suffering of the above listed beneficiaries and many more people in various ways. Some of which this report has not elaborated.
