FROM:  ASM CHISI  PROGRAM MANAGER

SUBJECT:             TA KAWINGA ACTIVITIES & SUPERVISION

INTRODUCTION:

TA Kawinga has several activities being carried out which were initially funded by Zikomo Group and its coordination to Volunteer Services Overseas. The activities founded last year were training of Bee keeping groups and Malda pump. The funded groups include 8 goat keeping groups, 94 beekeeping farmers, 22 orphan care centers, Building of Nakutepa resource centre, fertilizer by Barbra, 15 water pumps by VSO. These were visited and supervised on interest that may be Zikomo will take them up again on special interest as no founding to continue activities were coming up or supervision.

PROGRESS ON ACTIVITIES

ORPHAN CARE

I have been supervising these activities four to five times a month. This is of special interest in orphan care centre. Even though to them the whole program is abandoned due to lack of funding. Nakutepa as of now has 125 children of whom 60 are orphans 46 are girls and 24 boys. The children are lacking desks which mostly affected them in May, June and July due to reduced children at present at the centre due to coldness of floors. Care givers have not been trained. This year the children also had shortage of porridge.

USAGE OF RESOURCE CENTRE

Dram groups, adult learners and preschool groups are using the centre at different times. All village meetings are being carried out on this centre. Yes it is the meeting place or different activities. Other NGOS and European Union group meet there for Natural resource management. The centre those is lacking additional books, desks etc as outlined on the budget.

DRAMA GROUP

The resource has a well known Nakutepa dram group.  The group goes to the several places to perform dramas. Thus they always complain about t shirts to identify themselves and transport like bicycle to use to inform people of the other villages for their visit. The group also needs training on HIV/AIDS activities. The dram group has 35youths of which 18 are girls and 17are boys.

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GROUP.

The group has planted 5000 seedlings this year in January and February. The group has been rated as one of the best groups in natural resource management by European Union. The group is also planted trees for goat feeding. The group has 12 women and 9 men

WINTER FARMING

The group has a winter farming club which has planted maize. The group will sell green maize. The group comprises of 13 women and 6 men.

GOAT FARMING

Zikomo helped 8 goat groups with stock goat to start goat revolving in the villages. All the groups have the problem that they are not trained but a brief report on each circle. Utilization of goat milk in all is very little as they say the smell is strong thus needed to train them on how to prepare different snacks with goat milk. These groups are all gender sensitive that is 10 women and 10 men, even committees except mlima with 17 women and 3 men. The report will not give the data base in terms of kids born, passed, bellies in detailed live stock production as can not be typed in a day need the office to thave computer to create data base.

Mseka

At Mseka in March in 8 nannies had kids which were to be passed on to the group members. Their group problems started when the group village headman was sick in February to March when their village headman was found with TB and was admitted. The village headman was mostly in charge of the safety of the kraal. Thus the goats were kept at participants houses.

Mawagura.

5 Kids have been passed on as the bought only 10 nannies as in their area goats are expensive. Due to theft the goats are kept at the kraal during the day and at children houses at night. These are also involved in animal feed woodlot

Mlima

Mlima had problem with the Boer goat as it died in December so were advised to rent a Boer from Nakutepa thus passing on has not started but 6 nannies has kids.

NAKWENYA AND M’BAKA

M’baka village though very far it has done well in goat production. They have passed on 15 kids from their 20 nanny goats. At nakwenya the village headman took total ownership of the stock kraal. In March i visited them again to discuss with him and it was agreed that he should be part of the group and not be in the committee. A visit in April confirmed that our discussions were fruitful.

KASONDO AND SIMAKWERI

Kasondo has passed on 13 kids and simakweri has passed on 4 kids. Kasondo also has planted trees for goat forage. The major problem with Kasondo and Simakweri has been the changing of field facilitators of their own villages trained to implement the project in their village at a low pay. Within the year Kasondo has changed 3 times and simakweri more than 4 times due to lack of incentives.

MTIMBANJIRA

At Mtimbanjira the group has passed on 6 goats.

Though the activity have sent backs in terms of training and chemical bank, the activity has improved households in meat consumption, money from sells and self confidence and esteem that they can achieve something.
