The Zikomo team arrived just in time to see the first honey harvest from Sadi village (Machinga area), that received apiculture equipment and bee keeper training from Zikomo last year.
Thanks to the kind support of the people of Galway, Zikomo’s second Community Resource Centre in Matande village (Zomba region) is now nearing completion.
The caretakers of Zikomo's second Community Resource Centre, Edwin and Clement Mangani, looked on over the finishing touches to the building in Matande village (Zomba, Malawi). The centre will be used for orphan care, adult literacy classes, health education, horticultural education, and various income generating activities for the community of over 900 people.
The Zikomo team were extremely satisfied with the goat keeping programmes that have been going on in 20 villages in the southern region The success is attributed to the careful management of the goats by the local communities where the offspring are passed on to other villagers and the fact that only indigenous animals are used.
On Friday (21st August) the team will go to see the Malaria Prevention Programme in Nkudsi Bay (Mangochi). The programme involves educating community members about Malaria and how it is contracted, how to maintain and use the treated mosquito nets distributed by Zikomo, and spraying the insides of the households with anti-mosquito chemicals. Data will be collected from the villages at the end of September and will be compared with the base-line study conducted last year to see the impact of the programme.
A coffee morning in support of Zikomo will be held on the Thursday 27th of August at 11am in The Glenlo Abbey Hotel.
